From the very beginning, women have been underestimated. Always thought to be weaker and less capable, female athletes have come a long way since the creation of title IX. Title IX is a law saying that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." Without title IX, women would not have nearly the amount of opportunities that we do today. In 1972, when title IX was created, only 295,000 women were participating in any school sport. In the years following, that number increased to 3.2 million. In allowing more women to participate in sports, it not only improves the lives of women, but the lives of men too. People who participate in sports are more likely to interact better and perform the best in businesses and communities. It improves the lives of women because not only is it healthier for your heart and body, it allows women to have a better body image, higher self confidence, lower chance of teen pregnancy, more ability to stand up for themselves, confidence, the ability to work better as a team player, higher grades, less likely to do drugs, less likely to drop out, and more.
